Description

Corner of Queen and State Sts.
Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / Queen & State Sts / Chas. / 8 + 10 Queen St." The Joseph Olman House at 8 Queen Street is situated on one of the streets of the Grand Modell of 1680, standing as an example of combined domestic and commercial spaces. Following the fire of 1796, this three-story stuccoed brick building was constructed by Joseph Olman, a chandler, and completed before his death in 1813. It is likely that the principal rooms of the upper floors were used as living spaces, while the ground floor served commercial purposes. The building continued its dual use when it later houses the workshop and residence of Edwin H. Smith, a renowned local cabinetmaker, who operated in Charleston until his death in 1979. Poston, J. H. (1997). The Buildings of Charleston. Columbia: University of South Carolina Press.
