Description
Corner of Rutledge Ave. & Montague st., once the Charleston Free Library
Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / Chas. Free Library / 94 Rutledge Ave. / Chas. S.C." Constructed before the Civil War, the house built by Sea Island cotton planted, Isaac Jenkins Mikell House, sports a Minton-tiled portico supported by Corinthian column capitals carved from cypress and ornamented by rams’ heads. It is believed that Mikell built the house for his third wife, Mary Martha Pope. The house was sold to the Charleston Free Library in 1934, where it served the public for 25 years. It was restored as a residence by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Woodward in the 1960s. Poston, J. H. (1997). The Buildings of Charleston. Columbia: University of South Carolina Press.
