Description

Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / 173 Rutledge Ave. / Chas." Two and one-half story wooden Charleston single home on a high brick basement, this now razed building displayed four windows with dentiled cornices facing Rutledge Avenue across from Ashley Hall. Curved brick and marble steps with a wrought iron railing led to a doorway with classical entablature supported by four engaged, fluted columns, surmounted by two levels ornamented with Ionic pilasters. The two porches facing a spacious side yard sported seven wooden columns with Ionic pilasters and dentiled cornices. On the upper half-story, the building displayed two windows with a third oval window below the dentiled cornices. The garden faced a brick arcade with several brick archways beneath the porches.
