Description
The Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island is one of the oldest Presbyterian congregations in South Carolina, established in 1685. The Presbyterian Church on Edisto was created by the Church Act of 1706. The Neoclassic two story rectangular church with triangular pediment and oculus that stands today was built in 1831 by Mr. Pillans. The cupola in place of the steeple on the church makes it especially unique from a visual perspective. In 1836 the church was updated to include Doric columns, a portico, and an attached ceiling interior generously financed by William Seabrook and designed by Charleston architect E.M. Curtis. In 1971 the church was placed on the National Historic Registry.
