Description
St. Stephens Church in St. Stephens was started as a set off from St. James Church Santee in 1754. The original structure built on the 4.5 acre parcel of land was made of wood. This rare, small brick eighteenth-century parish church with its uniquely Georgian features that replaced the original structure was built between 1767 and 1769. Many relatives of Francis Marion were involved in the construction of St. Stephens Church. The church was built, designed, and had its bricks provided by A. Howard and Francis Villepontoux. William Axson was the master mason for the church construction. St. Stephens Church features a gambrel roof with curvilinear sections and Jacobean gable ends, round arch openings, Doric brick pilastered exterior, and an ornamental metal interior ceiling. Following the 1886 Earthquake the church was reinforced with iron rods, even though services had stopped in 1808. This was one of the few maintence and repair efforts made during the nineteenth cenutry that made services able to resume in 1932. In 1970 the church was listed as a National Historic Landmark.
