Description
The first church building constructed on the land was built in 1708, quickly being created after the Church Act of 1706, but was destroyed by a fire in 1725. The original historic church was built in 1726 as a rectangular brick Colonial building with a hipped roof and a cupola. That building was burnt by the British during the Revolution in 1782 in retreat, and the church building was rebuilt in 1788. During the Civil War, a Union cavalry from Massachusetts used the church as a stable and gutted the interior, even using the pews as firewood. Christ Church's historic church that can be seen today from Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant was finally rebuilt in 1874. In 1972 the church was listed on the National Historic Registry.
