Extracts from the General orders of 29th October 1776

The Continental Congress having promoted Colonel Chrisr. Gadsden of the 1st Regiment of So. Carolina Regular troops and Colonel Wm. Moultrie of the 2d Regiment to the rank of Brigadiers General in the army of the United States, they are to be respected and obey'd as such.

23d Novem. 1776

Parole

In Consequence of the promotion of Generals Gadsden & Moultrie, the following promotions take place in the 1st & 2d Regiments of So. Carolina Continental troops viz.

Lieut. Colonel Charles Cotesworth Pinckney of the 1st Regiment to be Colonel of the same Major Wm. Cattell to be Lieut. Colonel & Captn. Adam McDonald Major.

Lieut. Colonel Isaac Motte of the 2d Regiment to be Colonel of the same
Major Francis Marion to be Lieut. Colonel & Capt. Peter Horry Major

Agreeable to a resolution of the Hon'ble the General Assembly of this State, the following promotions take place in the 3d & 4th Regiments of the Continental forces of this state viz.

Lieut. Colonel Wm. Thompson of the 3d Regiment to be Colonel of the same
Major James Mayson to be Lieut. Colonel
Capt. Saml. Wise Major
Lt. Colonel Owen Roberts of the 1st or Artillery regiment to be Colonel of the same
Major Barnard Elliott to be Lt. Colonel & Capt. Barnd. Beckman Major


The Hon'ble the Continental Congress having ordain'd the following Declaration & Oath to be subscribed and taken by all Officers in the Service of the United States who now hold or hereafter shall hold a Commission or Office from Congress.

I_______Do acknowledge the Thirteen United States of America namely New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, & Georgia, to be free independent & sovereign States, & declare that the People thereof owe no Allegiance or Obedience to George the third King of Great Britain, and I do renounce, refuse and abjure any Allegiance or Obedience to him. And I do swear that I will to the utmost of my Power support, maintain and defend the said United States, against the said King George the third and by his Heirs & Successors, and his & their Abettors, Assistants, and Adherents, and will serve the said United States in the Office of _______, which I now hold, and in any other Office which I may hereafter hold by their appointment or under their Authority with Fidelity, and honour and according to the best of my skill & understanding

So help me God

Commanding Officers of all Regiments & Corps are as soon as possible to fix upon some days, when their men shall be drawn out under Arms, & their Officers order'd to their Posts at which time and in the Presence of their men, the said declaration and Oath shall be subscribed & taken first by the field Officers & then by all other Officers & that the said Oath may be administer'd, with proper Solemnity Commanding Officers are to apply to his Excellency the President requesting him to appoint some Magistrate duty Qualified to Administer the same and All Officers who being absent on duty or otherwise may not be able to attend, on the day appointed, are immediately on their return to their respective Regiments or Corps to subscribe and take the said declaration of Oath in the Presence of One field Officer,
two Captains, & two Lieuts.

The rank of the Field officers of the 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th & 5th Regiments is to be as follows
