Ninety Six District
So. Carolina
Geo. Handley.
Sir,
An Express, from General Winn, who is appointed Superintendant of Indian Affairs for the Southern Department, is on his way to you with a letter
by him I take the opportunity to drop you a line respecting the situation of this State which is truly alarming. Since I had the pleasure of seeing you, a great number of our Citizens has been killed & cruelly murdered by the Creek Indians in the course of the last week, not less those fifteen or twenty persons were killed in Washington County. I sent an Express to General Matthews requesting him to attend you at Seneca
who informed me that he woud do so, since which, I have not heard a word either directly or indirectly from him or you respecting the business of your meeting, which the situation of this Country requires immediate & effectual measures to be preserved, to prevent hostilities on the part of the
Indians & to give security to our frontier settlers to proceed on their planting business.
General Winn informs me that he will be in Augusta in a few days. I think it woud be adviseable & woud recommend your attendance here at the same time, if no effectual measures has been done by your & Genl. Matthews to procure a suspension of hostilities which if you have, you will please to loose no time to inform me thereof.
I have the honor to be,
with every respect,
Your Obedt. & Huml Servt
