Col. Robert Brewton house
Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / Col. Robt. Brewton House / Chas. 71 Church St." 71 Church Street, or the Colonel Robert Brewton House was built between 1721 and 1741. A deed indicates the house was originally built in the 1720s, but a fire caused the house to need to be rebuilt in the 1740s. The house is still the oldest surviving Charleston single home on the peninsula. The home was built by the distinguished Colonel Robert Brewton who was a well-known "merchant, politician, and powder receiver" during the time until he sold it to his son-in-law and owner of 69 Church Street Jordan Roache. The house has some molded brick cornices of note, while many of the original colonial decorations like exterior stucco and piazzas were lost during 19th and 20th century renovations. In 1960 the house was made a National Historic Landmark. References: Poston, J. (1997). The buildings of Charleston: A guide to the city’s architecture. Columbia, University of South Carolina Press.
