Description

Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / 83-85 Church St." 83-85 Church Street, Cabbage Row or William Hendricks Tenements were constructed in 1749 or 1750 by the Christ Church planter William Hendricks. The first name refers to cabbages that were sold in front of the tenements, the second name obviously refers to the man who had them built. Cabbage Row was renamed Catfish Row by Dubose Heyward in his story Porgy and popularized by the Ira Gershwin opera Porgy and Bess. The stuccoed two-story, double tenement led to a rear courtyard under a central arch
the original nine by nine windows sashes are still visible however the other windows original to the building reflect renovations. In 1936 Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds Brown rehabilitated the tenements for use as a winter residence. Poston notes that this "marked the beginning of a trend of renovating former dependencies in the city as showplace residences." References: Poston, J. (1997).
