Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / 1st Baptist Church / 61 Church St. / Charleston" Poston: 61 Church Street, the First Baptist Church has been a location for a house of worship since 1699. The church that stands today was designed by by local architect Robert Mills, it was constructed between 1819 and 1822. While meant to be "purely Greek in style" there are a mix of Roman and Greek Doric and Tuscan columns supporting the structure. The portico-parapet and friezes original to the structure have not survived. The church was restored in 1990.
