Thomas Rose's House
Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / 59 Church St." Poston: 59 Church Street, or the Thomas Rose house was constructed by Thomas Rose in 1735 in the city of Charles Town when it was still an English colony. The house was sold not long after completion to the Savages who owned it for ninety year. In 1929 the house was purchased by the Frank Whitmans and restored by local architect Albert Simons were many facade changes were made. The home was again purchased by architect and the photographer of this work Henry P. Staats, who founded the Historic Charleston Foundation with his wife Juliette Wiles Staats. The original outbuildings that survived were incorporated into the present standing house. According to the South Carolina Department of Archives and History the Thomas Rose house despite its many alterations this Charleston "double house" is striking example of colonial architecture as well as Georgian brickwork and paneling. It was placed on the National Historic Register in 1970.
