Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / S. C. Nat. Bank / Cor[ner] State & Broad / Chas. S.C. / 16 Broad St." Number 16 Broad Street was built in 1817 and designed by Robert Mills (also of the Fireproof Building. A store front was added in 1839 which is said to be of "national importance.") Poston: 16 Broad Street, the Second Bank of the United States Building, is a two story Neoclassical building covered with stucco and decorated with an elaborate carved, gilt oak eagle. The interior retains some, but limited portions of its Rococo Revival plasterworks. The bank complex includes 2 State Street, 14 Broad Street, and 12 Broad Street. 16 Broad Street was listed on the National Historic Registry in 1973. The building was constructed 1817 and an addition was made in 1850. According to Wells Fargo, 16 Broad Street is the oldest continuously operating bank in the nation.
