Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / Gov. Thos. Bennett / 1 Lucas St. - Now 69 Barre St. / Chas." Poston: Gov. Thomas Bennett House, located at 69 Barre Street, constructed circa 1822 and restored in 1988. This beautiful federal style home and mills belonged to the very wealthy and prestigious Bennett family during the antebelleum period, the adjoining mills having since been demolished. Thomas Bennett jr. served as governor of the state from 1820 to 1822 as well as serving in in the General Assembly in the early part of the nineteenth century. The home belonged to E.L. Halsey in the late nineteenth century, was sold after WWI and served many uses until it was restored by the Roper Foundation in the late 1980s as a venue. The Gov. Thomas Bennett House is on the National Historic Registry.
