Izard House

Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / Izard House / 110 Broad Street" Poston: 110 Broad Street was constructed circa 1728, first alterations 1800 and again in 1837
renovations made in 1981 and 1985. The house found on 110 Broad Street can be called either the William Harvery House, who had it built, or the Izard House, the family who bought it afterwards and lived in it for at least 100 years after that, but it is a house of note no matter what it is referred to as. Constructed circa 1728 this pre-Revolutionary structure survived fires from the 18th and 19th centuries, so is one of the remaining structures from the colonial period. This three story building has thick masonry walls, quoined corners, and a bellcast roof. It was lovely a enough structure to lease to the royal governor James Glen from 1743 to 1756. In 1800 a Neoclassical fanlight and wrought iron balcony were added by the Izards. In 1837, the home was sold the Izard's relatives the Poinsett's who added several Italian marble mantles to the interior which were even older than the house itself. Although the Poinsetts are remembered most for the flower Joel Poinsett brought back with when he was minister to Mexico that is named after him, the Poinsetta.
