St. Michael's Church
Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / St. Michael's Church / Chas. 80 Meeting St." The wrought iron funerary urns of the St Michael’s churchyard gates, signed, J.A.W. Lusti, c.1848, are underscored by beautifully scrollwork. The graveyard displays one of the only in situ wooden grave boards In America, dated 1772. Edward Rutledge, signer of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, signer of the U.S. Constitution
Gen. Mordecai Gist, Maryland Revolutionary War hero, and the Charleston jurist, James Louis Petigru (whose home is photographed in this collection, numbers 105-109) are all interred here.
