Description
This bill of sale for the slave named Primus was created by George Rathbon and presented to the buyer, Jeremiah Rathbon, for the sum of 80 dollars. Job Spencer acted as the witness of the sale, which took place in Rhode Island. Along with the bill of sale there is a newspaper clipping and letter of explanation. The newspaper clipping includes a transcription of the bill of sale.

Know all men by these presents that I George Rathbon of Exeter in the County of Kings County & Colony of Rhode Island yeoman for and in consideration of the Sum Eighty good and possible Spanish Milled Dollars to me in hand before the Ensealing hereof well and truly paid by Jeremiah Rathbon of Exeter aforesaid yeoman have Bargained, Sold, Set over and Delivered unto the said Jeremiah Rathbon, his heirs, executors & administrators and assigns forever one Negro man Called Primus.
To Have and To Hold the said Negro man to him the said Jeremiah Rathbon, his heirs and assigns for ever to his and their own proper use Benefit and behoof and of the said George Rathbon for myself, my Heirs Executors & administrators Do hereby Covenant and Engage the said Negro man To him the said Jeremiah Rathbon, his heirs and assigns forever free & Clean from the Lawfull Claims and Demands of any other person or persons whatsoever for ever To Warrant Serve and Defend by those presents Jn. Wittings & Confirmation whereof. Those hereunto Set my hand
this Seal the 28th Day of February in the 14th year of his Majesties Reign George the third King of Great Brittain AD 1773
