Description
This letter was written the day following the execution of British Major Andre at whose trial Nathaneal Greene was President and in that capacity signed his death warrant. It has also been asserted that it was Greene who cast the deciding vote in favor of Andre's being hanged instead of shot, according to his request to Washington. The retaliation by Benedict Arnold that Greene predicts in this letter was never exacted by the British although Arnold, in a letter to Washington, had threatened such measures in case of Andre's execution. Also in this letter, Greene suggests he take over command of the South's affairs. This was acted upon on October 15th when Greene assumed Gate's command.
