Description

Heyward-Washington House
Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / Heyward-Washington / House / 87 Church St. Chas." The Heyward-Washington House, built circa 1771, is best know for the time our first president George Washington stayed in it during his visit to Charleston. However, it also was the home to one of South Carolina's four signer's of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Heyward jr., as well as the famous Grimke family. In 1978 the house became a National Historic Landmark. It is a lovely representation of Georgian architecture in the city, and it is still able to be toured to this day because was purchased by Charleston Museum in 1929. The home features priceless examples of colonial furniture as well as a Georgian kitchen, and the formal gardens have been restored to their full colonial glory including plants that were common to gardening in the Charleston area during the Revolutionary period.
