Back oh photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / St. Philip's Church / 142 Church St." 142 Church Street, St. Philip's Episcopal Church, which is sometimes listed at 146 Church Street is home to the oldest religious congregation (established 1681) in the state. The original church was known for its English Baroque style, it was built between 1722 to 1723, but was destroyed in a fire in 1835. The present building was constructed between 1835 through 1838, with the famous spire in its Wrenn-Gibb style, completed between 1848 through 1850. Local architect's Joseph Hyde (designed the building) and Edward Brickell White (designed the spire) with redesigning and reconstructing the current church. the current building was damaged by a fire in 1920, and was renovated and had additions added during the decade under the direction of Albert Simons. The structure visible today is known for its stucco brick facade, single tier windows, and Tuscan columns. Its interior has high vaults and Corinthian columns, plaster barrel vaults, galleries, and an apsidal chancel. The chancel and apse were altered after the 1920 fire. Wrought iron gates can be found in the front of the church, and the spire is topped with a weather vane. In 1973, the church was placed on the National Historic Register and also became a national Historic Landmark. The church was restored between 1993 and 1994. John C. Calhoun is buried in this cemetery References: Poston, J. (1997). The buildings of Charleston: A guide to the city’s architecture. Columbia, University of South Carolina Press.
