Description

Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / 28 Chapel St. 1832" According to Alice R. Huger Smith and Daniel Elliot Huger Smith in their book The Dwelling Houses of Charleston South Carolina, 28 Chapel Street or the Elias Vanderhorst house was built on land purchased circa 1832 and the home was still in the family when the book was published in 1917. Poston: Constructed circa 1832, the stuccoed brick villa is an example of Greek Revival architecture with the two and a half stories situated on a high basement, double semicircular flight stone stairs and over a piazza. A dogtooth cornice pediment projects from the gable roof. Fluted Doric columns run along the front of the piazza. The house was built by the wealthy rice planters, the Vanderhorsts, who owned much of Kiawah Island at the time. The house was renovated and rehabilitated in as apartments in 1983 as it had become a disheveled with age, but was partially restored as a private residence in 1990.
