Description

Hibernian Hall
Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / Hibernian Hall / Chas. / 105 Meeting St." The Hibernian Society was established in 1810 to provide aid to immigrant families from Ireland, and in 1835, the society purchased a lot on Meeting Street. The architect for the Capitol dome in Washington, DC, Thomas U. Walter, of Philadelphia, was paid $100 in 1833 for plans for a building. Construction began in 1839 and was completed by January 1841 at a total cost of $40,000. The exterior of Hibernian Hall sports an Ionic portico, with an unpretentious façade save the gilded Irish harp over the door. The exterior portico was rebuilt after the 1886 earthquake, when the proportion of the columns was altered, a more elaborate modillioned cornice and an Italianate window in the tympanum of the pediment were added. An elaborate wrought-iron fence and cast-iron gas lamps enclose the property from Meeting Street.
