Includes South Carolina Society Hall Built on the site of the original St Philip’s, St. Michael’s Church was begun in 1752, and the exterior, except the Tuscan portico, was completed by 1756. The architect is unknown, but Samuel Cardy is believed to have designed and built the church in the style of Sir Christopher Wren as modified by Gibbs, resulting in similarities with St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields in London. The sacristy was added in the southeast corner in 1883. The chancel window was installed in 1893, depicting St Michael Casting Out the Dragon, based on the Raphael painting and created by Tiffany & Company. The pulpit and sounding board, steeple detailing, gallery column capitals, narthex stair brackets, and soffit flowers were done by English house and ship carver, Henry Burnet. The large column capitals of the chancel were carved by Anthony Forehand, the altar by John Lord. The box pews are original and hewn of red cedar.
