Description

Back of photograph: "(c) Henry P. Staats / 54 Meeting St." 54 Meeting Street was constructed in the early nineteenth century by Timothy Ford, a well-to-do lawyer from New Jersey. Upon graduating from Princeton, Ford moved to Charleston to work with Chancellor Henry W. deSaussure. Ford purchased the site from Francis Mulligan where the current home was constructed between 1800 and 1806. The three and a half story home constructed of brick and stucco includes a slate hipped roof. While the exterior facade of the home is relatively simplistic, the Neoclassical interior woodworking is worth noticing. In 1824, the Ford family entertained the Marquis de Lafayette when he returned for a celebratory tour of the United States. Ford's daughter, Louisa, later went on to marry Dr. Edmund Ravenel, a pioneer in American medicine, who added a small building at 52 Meeting Street to operate as his office. Beginning with a restoration in 1915 many outbuilding have been encompassed into the greater house complex.
