Description

Sketch of unidentified facade. Possibly 186 King Street. Back of photograph: "Unidentified. Possibly 186 King St." 186 King Street, the Hahnbaum-Moffett Building. Built before 1788 by German physician, Dr. George Hahnbaum, a founder of the Medical Society of South Carolina, and later owned by a saddler, and converted to a tavern, the building was restored in 1978. The building features a ground-story, classical entablature with a triglyph frieze supported by four engaged, fluted columns, surmounted by two levels ornamented with Ionic pilasters and topped by a modillioned cornice and parapet. The first-floor columns were saved by Historic Charleston Foundation and returned during the building’s highly commended restoration as clothing store, RTW. Poston, J. H. (1997). The Buildings of Charleston. Columbia: University of South Carolina Press. Stoney, S. G. (1976). This is Charleston. Charleston: The Carolina Art Association.
