18 State Street, the Nathan Hart House, was owned for investment purposes by the same family from 1815-1905. The two-story masonry building reflects the changing uses and status of the neighborhood, housing at various times a bake house, junk shop, and the residence of a river pilot. The front window and side piazza were subsequent additions. Both this house and 20 State Street to the north side of Unity Alley, received major renovations in the 1980s. 20 State Street has a ground-story brick section dating from circa 1870 and a second-story frame portion built circa 1901. 22-24 State Street, also known as the Johnson-Poinsett Tenements. Some controversy remains over the date and builder of these double tenements. A leading Charleston statesman and importer of the plant that bears his name, Joel Poinsett amalgamated several lots formerly belonging to Dr. Joseph Johnson in order to construct a double tenement on the property. This building has a central archway surmounted by curious stucco scoring and three-story façade with gable roof and dormers. Poston, J. H. (1997). The Buildings of Charleston.
