Description

The original church building was completed in 1687 by French Huguenots. In 1706 the church was repurposed by the Church Act as a parish Church of England. Six buildings have been on the land between 1687 and 1890. In 1768 the Wambaw Church or the Old Brick Church was constructed. The current building used for worship was completed in 1890 called the "Chapel of Ease for the Wambaw Church". The church recognized today is a rectangular single story English brick structure with a slate hipped roof. Gabled temple front porticos can be found on the front and the back of the church
they are supported by four rounded brick columns. The portico of the church, however, is constructed from local wedge bricks. The back portico was walled up to create a vestry in 1852. The original ceiling and flagstone floors not only survived both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, but still remain today. From 1920 to 1970 there was an effort on the church's part to fund raise in order to stabilize and preserve the church for future generations. In 1972 St. James Santee Wambaw Church was declared a National Historic Landmark.
