<text>London, October 29th 1785
Sir,
Since I wrote to you on the 12th instant, I have received your letter of the 8th
August, wherein you desire me to repeat to you what concern Mr. John Hopton
had in the transaction of the Money I lent your Grandfather, as it had escaped
your Memory: the answer to which I have to acquaint you, that Messrs. Powell,
Hopton and C. having owed me a large Sum of Money several years, Mr.
Hopton called on me in November 1770 and told me, that, as they were
desirous of speculating in Indico, they would be glad to have the use of the
Money another year to which I consented, but on the last day of december he
informed me that being disappointed in their Speculation, he would pay of their
Contracts to me, which produced some dispute between us, and I positively
refused to take the Money, declaring at the same time my refusal did not
proceed from any objections I had to the quality of the Money, but from his
Agreement to keep it another year. A morning or two afterwards, I met your
Grandfather at Market, and, in the Course of Conversation mentioned this
matter to hire, upon which he observed to me, that as I was a great deal
respected in my political principles, my refusal would be misconstrued, and, if I
would receive the Money he would be glad to take it off my Hands for a year
certain, assigning for reason that he had made a purchase of a large quantity of
Indico, but having lent the Money he had provided to pay for it to the Treasury,
on a positive Promise

Promise it should be refused time enough to fulfil his engagements, he found
himself disappointed, and had rather borrow than be worse than his Word. In
order therefore to accommodate your Grandfather, I went to Mr. Hopton, after
my refusal to take the Money, as above, and told him I was willing to receive it
to oblige a Friend who had offered to me: but he informed me he had parted
with it; however, he would send out and Collect as much and let me have it in a
few days; and accordingly he called on me on the 9th January 1777, with the
Money, which I immediately carried to your Grandfather, who gave me this Note
for it payable in 12 months, with Interest reduced by a recent [illegible] to 7 per
Cent: so that it must be ardent to you that, to serve your Grandfather, I drew this
Money out of the Bonds of Powell Hopton & Co., who afterwards paid me the
depreciation, according to our Table, and would have unquestionably done so if
they had, at a late period, discharged their Contracts; which, from my
Connection with them, perhaps might have remained uncancelled to this day, if
to oblige your Grandfather, I had not called the Money out of their Hands.
You are aware that your Grandfather insisted on discharging his Note in August
1779, in the depreciated Currency, without discounting the Money I took up on
his Credit of Mr. Manning, which obliged me afterwards to dispose of my
Plantation to prevent his selling your Grandfather's Stock in the Funds here, as
he threatened me and you are [illegible] to every other Circumstance of this
transaction, which I duly owed to a State of the Debt I delivered to your Brother,
previous to his departure and relying on your Honour and Praise to Pay me:
[illegible] with sincere regard, Sire, Your most obedt humle servt, Robert
Williams.
Gabriel Manigault Esq.re
Having [illegible] the forgoing letter at the request of Mr. Williams I do declare
the facts therein stated to be true.

Sir,
I received your Letter of the 30th July, and am sorry it is not in your
power to be assisting to me in my difficulty: but as I do not doubt of
your sincere [illegible] in this respect, I am hopeful my Account will be
an object of your earliest Attention, though I am not a little surprised
at what you mention, concerning the many and profusing demands
on your Father's Estate, to which your Grandfather must have been a
Stranger, who would certainly have discharged them before he
placed any Money belonging to it into the Treasury.
According to your desire, I inclose you a [illegible] of the Account I
delivered you against your Grandfather's [illegible], but as your
Legislature have made another Depreciation, I have also sent you an
Account of my demand, agreeable that Table: both which Accounts
are stated from one in your Grandfather's hand writing, and you may
take either as the rule of Justice in the Settlement.
Sometime after my arrival here, I called at Doctor's Commons, and
found it to be the Practice of the Prerogative Court, to grant Letters
of Administration in default of the Executor's Appearance and
producing the will, after a Citation of 30 days at the Exchange, but as
I wished to avoid the imputation of measuring out relief by my own
Ideas, I declined taking out Letters of Administration as a Creditor or
your Grand-father's Stock in the Funds: however, I thought

necessary to give notice of his Death at the Bank and India-House with a view to present a
Transfer without the interposition of a legal representative who would be liable to my demand
here, if the matter should not be settled according to your promise, by any casualty or accident,
and I intended to have mentioned this circumstance at your Brother, but his frequent absence
from Town and subsequent long and distressing indisposition hindered me until lately, and as I
found he had Sold the Store and was about to leave the Kingdom, I thought it reasonable he
should give me his Word, that if this affair were not settled pursuant to your engagement, he
would remit to this Country the value of the Stock so transferred, to be amendable to the justice
of my demand here, but as he told me he has [illegible] he could not, as an Executor, make me
any Promise of this nature, rather than take any steps that might embarrass a [illegible], I choose
to say on your Promise and [illegible] to pay me the Balance due to me from your Grandfather's
Estate, as fast as you can collect the Money belonging to it, and as your Brother is now of Age, I
am persuaded he will concur to the Justice and Equity of the measure.
I congratulate you sincerely on your Marriage, and wishing you the utmost felicity, am, with great
regard, Sir,

Dear Sir,
Since I wrote to you on the 29th October 1785, I have not had the
pleasure of hearing from you: but as I said there is no impediment to
the operation of the Instalment-Act, I must beg the favour of you to
discharge my Account of Commissions against your Father's Estate to
my Attornies, as soon as possible.
I am also hopeful you will be able to collect Monies under that Act, to
make my Attornies a payment in part of my demand against your
Grand-father's Estate, and trust you will readily settle the Balance by
Bond or Note, according to your Promise, as I am persuaded you
have ever regulated your actions or principles of Honour and Probity,
while, if that Promise did not bind the Estate, would render you
incapable of Injustice, though legalized by Power or dictated by
Interest, and I have too good an opinion of your understanding to
imagine you would, in that case, suffer your Mind to be influenced by
the Passions and political Prejudices, with which I have been most
ungenerously prosecuted.
I beg you will make my respectful Compliments to your Brother and
Sister: and am, with great regard, Dear Sir, your most obedt humle
Serv, Robert Williams

Dear Sir,

Since I wrote to you on the 29th October 1785, I have not had the pleasure of hearing from you: but as I said there is no impediment to the operation of the Instalment-Act, I must beg the favour of you to discharge my Account of Commissions against your Father's Estate to my Attornies, as soon as possible.

I am also hopeful you will be able to collect Monies under that Act, to make my Attornies a payment in part of my demand against your Grand-father's Estate, and trust you will readily settle the Balance by Bond or Note, according to your Promise, as I am persuaded you have ever regulated your actions or principles of Honour and Probity, while, if that Promise did not bind the Estate, would render you incapable of Injustice, though legalized by Power or dictated by Interest, and I have too good an opinion of your understanding to imagine you would, in that case, suffer your Mind to be influenced by the Passions and political Prejudices, with which I have been most ungenerously prosecuted.

I beg you will make my respectful Compliments to your Brother and Sister: and am, with great regard, Dear Sir, your most obedt humle Serv, Robert Williams

It is with infinite regret that I inform you, my dear Sir, that my departure has
irrevocably stopped for Europe, it takes all of my feelings combined, that remind
me of my homeland, to decide to leave a country where I tried so much to mark
the attention & out of generosity you are convinced, Sir, that you take first place
among the people to which I owe recognition. Whatever fate that has been
destined for me, whatever country that must see me finish my career, whatever
distance that separates me from you, the memory of your goodness will

It is with infinite regret that I inform you, my dear Sir, that my departure has irrevocably stopped for Europe, it takes all of my feelings combined, that remind me of my homeland, to decide to leave a country where I tried so much to mark the attention & out of generosity you are convinced, Sir, that you take first place among the people to which I owe recognition. Whatever fate that has been destined for me, whatever country that must see me finish my career, whatever distance that separates me from you, the memory of your goodness will nevertheless be present in my imagination. Allow me to offer the [illegible] to Mrs. Manigault, in assuring her that the women I will see in Europe will never erase the memory of her kindness. Also, please be the interpreter of my feelings with your family. If Henry ever travels to France, I will be very happy to see him there, no longer

Sir,
When I left Carolina, the distress I was in, prevented my furnishing
you, according to your desire, with an Account of my Commissions on
the Management of your Father's Estate, which I did not think
material as the Executorship Account I settled in 1777 with your
Grandfather, who, on your Father's death, insisted on my Conducting
the pecuniary concerns, would enable you to ascertain the Amount of
these Commissions, and be a guide to you in any Payments you
might be disposed to make me or my Attornies on that score.
My Friendship for your Father, would induce me to sacrifice any legal
advantage of this kind, to his Memory, but I have been so plundered
of my Nature, that this object is of too much importance to my Family
to relinquish and therefore I now inclose you the Account of my
Commissions, wherein you will observe, I have charged only 22 per
Cent for receiving and the like sum for paying all Monies generally
that have passed to my Hands, without separating the Interest made,
on which the Law allows 10 per Cent: and as you have Money in this
Country, I am hopeful my Situation will induce you to remit me the
Balance, as soon as possible, in whole or in part, by a Bill: especially
as you must be sensible it was in my power to leave [illegible] the
Commissions in my Hands 8 years ago, where there was no
depreciation: but if, under these Circumstances, you should be of
opinion I am not entitled to this Mark of Attention, I must beg the
favour of you to settle the Balance with my Attornies, that they may
afford me some Relief in my difficulties; as not one of my debts have
had the Humanity to pay a single farthing of the

The long arrears of Interest due to me, for the support of my
numerous Family, which with Mr. Prioleau's Persecution and injustice,
obliged them to leave the Country and am, Sir,
Your most obedt servt,
Robert Williams
P.S. You will take notice that I have [illegible] the Estate with my Profit
and [illegible] Advice, from time to time.

Sir,

When I left Carolina, the distress I was in, prevented my furnishing you, according to your desire, with an Account of my Commissions on the Management of your Father's Estate, which I did not think material as the Executorship Account I settled in 1777 with your Grandfather, who, on your Father's death, insisted on my Conducting the pecuniary concerns, would enable you to ascertain the Amount of these Commissions, and be a guide to you in any Payments you might be disposed to make me or my Attornies on that score.

My Friendship for your Father, would induce me to sacrifice any legal advantage of this kind, to his Memory, but I have been so plundered of my Nature, that this object is of too much importance to my Family to relinquish and therefore I now inclose you the Account of my Commissions, wherein you will observe, I have charged only 22 per Cent for receiving and the like sum for paying all Monies generally that have passed to my Hands, without separating the Interest made, on which the Law allows 10 per Cent: and as you have Money in this Country, I am hopeful my Situation will induce you to remit me the Balance, as soon as possible, in whole or in part, by a Bill: especially as you must be sensible it was in my power to leave [illegible] the Commissions in my Hands 8 years ago, where there was no depreciation: but if, under these Circumstances, you should be of opinion I am not entitled to this Mark of Attention, I must beg the favour of you to settle the Balance with my Attornies, that they may afford me some Relief in my difficulties</text>
